#LIST OF GAY BARS DC PROFESSIONAL#
I don't feel that African American men are unwelcome in such places, but as a white person I don't have a good sense of whether or not people would make you feel uncomfortable.ĭespite the pessimistic tone of the previous paragraphs, I think DC would be a good fit for you as a 31 year old professional gay black man. There are a lot of professional gay men of color here, probably second only to Atlanta, but you won't see them at Cobalt or the top floor of Halo.

I really don't feel that the gay scene is very integrated here, and I'm not sure why. Both floors are pretty packed, and everyone seems happy, but it's as if there were still Jim Crow laws on the books, that's how segregated it is. The top floor is 95% white and Asian, and the bottom floor (which is newer), is 95% African-American. Halo, which is at 14th and P or so, has a lot of African American men, but the bar is extremely strange. The bars on 17th St., for example, have few gay men of color, although there are a fair number of Asian Americans. The one thing I will say is that gay bars themselves are pretty segregated. She's got a good feel for which neighborhoods have the most gay people, and where to go in particular. However, on the surface, it looks like Dupont/Logan is a great place to be. Obviously, because of my personal background, it's hard for me to say how comfortable things are for a gay black man. was historically a middle class black neighborhood with a bohemian arts scene. Now the above mentioned neighborhoods, all contiguous, have a lot of "family". With the real estate boom and growing population in DC (as well as growing acceptance of being out), gay-friendly businesses have spread to the north and east of Dupont.

(from 9th to 18th) and Connecticut Ave (from N to R).įor a while, Dupont Circle was the primary gay-friendly neighborhood in DC. in Dupont (from Q to U), and hitting up a few bars and clubs on U St. in Logan (between P and V Streets), hanging out on the patio bars of 17th St. I recommend dining along the 1400 block of P St., exploring the shopping along 14th St. here, try to come to Dupont/Logan and hang out for a weekend.

I am not sure, however, how many staffers are people of color. There is even an office of Gay and Lesbian Affairs. As a straight woman living in Logan Circle, I can say that it's a fairly integrated and very friendly place.Īs for professional life, the DC government, particularly the Mayor's office, has been very pro-active about hiring from all walks of life. The neighborhoods with the most gay culture are Dupont, Logan Circle, and U St.
